Otto Bock and Richard Zirger founded Elreg Distributors Ltd. in 1980. It was first established to service the smaller rebuilders of automotive starters and alternators in Toronto, Ontario and the surrounding region. The name EL-REG actually comes from the term ‘ELectronic REGulator’ as this was the first product that ELREG supplied to its customers.
During the early 80's, aftermarket product sales grew as the number of SKU’s increased, however there were increasing requests for Original Equipment Manufactured (OEM) products. Hence Elreg became a qualified distributor for Bosch and Motorola (now Leece-Neville).
It was also recognized that there was a growing demand for heavy-duty industrial equipment, coach/transit buses and larger On/Off-road vehicles and so in the early 90’s focus was expanded to providing services to the customers servicing these industries.
It was then determined that the various procedures and systems used to achieve the success of the company to date, needed to be documented and formalized to establish a template for continued success. ELREG therefore worked toward ISO certification and officially became certified in 1994.
In 1997 ELREG became an authorized warehouse distributor for Delco-Remy.
The evolution process has continued, as there has become more of a demand for new product as opposed to remanufactured. Complete unit demand has also increased and the need for component parts somewhat declined. The landscape of our inventory has reflected this evolution process throughout the years.
C.E. Niehoff, Lucas, and most recently Nikko have all become part of the OEM line-up that ELREG offers to its customers.
On-site technical support was established in 2004 to ensure we could better meet our customer’s requirements with respect to product evaluations and analysis. This has also allowed for some on-premise assembly of specialty products.
