How does the brushless design in some heavy-duty alternators boost efficiency?

Brushless alternators are increasingly favoured in heavy-duty settings due to their enhanced durability and efficiency. Unlike traditional alternators, they eliminate brushes that wear out from friction with slip rings, extending their service life. The absence of brushes reduces energy loss, often leading to better cooling and minimized voltage drops. As a result, brushless designs typically offer reduced maintenance, quieter operation, and more consistent performance, making them a valuable choice for demanding applications.

Why use a heavy-duty alternator with a higher output rating than required by the application?

Employing a heavy-duty alternator with an output exceeding the application’s requirements can present both challenges and benefits. Higher-rated alternators usually come at a higher cost, potentially leading to unnecessary expenditure if the surplus capacity is unused. They might also operate below their optimal efficiency range when underutilized, potentially impacting fuel efficiency. Additionally, these alternators might be bulkier, affecting mounting and overall weight considerations. However, the upside is the added buffer they provide for future electrical needs or unexpected peak demands.

Can a Bosch T1 Alternator be rebuilt?

The answer is yes, however, it is not always practical to do so. It depends on the condition of the alternator and what parts need to be replaced. If the alternator just needs maintenance and wearing parts need to be replaced, then repair kit part #420-9535-K can be purchased from Elreg Distributors Ltd. This kit contains the bearings, regulator w/brushes, seals, terminal kit, rotor kit, & hardware. If the stator and/or rotor need replacing, these can also be purchased; however, it reaches a point where the total cost of the parts and labour to rebuild exceeds the cost of purchasing a brand-new alternator.

Do alternators charge batteries?

Alternators are NOT battery chargers.

Alternators are designed to maintain a battery charge while supplying the vehicle with sufficient power to run all of the various electrical accessories. Alternators are NOT designed to recharge completely discharged batteries. Before installing a new alternator, the battery(s) should be tested and fully charged with a “Battery Charger”.  Ensuring that your battery(s) are healthy and in good condition will help to ensure you get many years of service from your alternator.

Do remote sense alternators save battery life?

A Remote Sense Alternator prolongs battery life by ensuring that the batteries are kept fully charged. Due to many factors, the voltage from the alternator drops by the time it gets to the battery. Just because the alternator is sending 14 volts doesn’t mean that the batteries are receiving 14 volts. With remote sense, a second wire reads the actual voltage at the battery, that’s coming from the alternator. It signals the alternator to boost its output to compensate for voltage drop and ensure that the batteries are getting 14 volts. This can reduce your battery charge time by 50%.
