Can Bosch Alternators Withstand the Elements? and Other FAQs

Bosch is one of the top names in alternators, but as a fleet manager, of course, you need to be sure it’s the best brand for your vehicles and equipment. How can you be sure your Bosch alternator will do the job the best?

If you have questions, we have answers. Here are four of the most common questions asked about Bosch alternators.

Can Bosch alternators withstand the elements?

You may already know that Bosch alternators are made to withstand high demand, making them superior performers. They are also manufactured with extreme weather in mind. Your Bosch alternators will tolerate both hot and cold extremes in temperature, making them ideal for fleets in all climates.

I’ve heard of the Bosch Ultimate Protection Plan. What is this, and how does it benefit my fleet?

When you buy an all-new Bosch alternator, you are automatically covered under Bosch’s Ultimate Protection Plan for the next two years. This means that if the vehicle is stranded because of a failed alternator during these two years, Bosch will cover the cost of 24-hour roadside assistance, whether you need a jump or a tow. This generous protection plan saves you worry and money in case of a breakdown once your new alternators are installed.

What should be done before installing a Bosch alternator?

Before installing your Bosch alternator, you should check several things. Check the battery, ensuring that it is fully charged, so that you don’t put too much stress on the new alternator by making it charge a drained battery. Also be sure to perform a voltage drop test on your battery cables, to be sure that none need to be replaced, and check all connections with the battery for corrosion. All of these things can put undue stress on the new alternator, and potentially shorten its lifespan.

Can a Bosch alternator be used to charge a drained battery?

Charging a drained battery is actually very hard on an alternator. The alternator is designed to maintain a battery’s charge at the same time as it powers the vehicle. Asking it to fully charge the battery, even while it provides whatever power the rest of the vehicle’s systems need, put a lot of stress on an alternator and could shorten its lifespan. To prevent this, always use a trickle charger to recharge a battery before running the vehicle, or buy a new one if the vehicle’s existing battery is having trouble holding a charge.
