How to Determine Whether You Have a Clockwise or Counterclockwise Starter?

The easiest way to determine whether your starter rotates clockwise or counterclockwise is to look at the starter pinion. You need to look at the pinion at the end that comes into contact with the ring gear or the end that is furthest from the starter body. From this view at 12 o’clock, what side of the teeth is the chamfer on? If the chamfer is on the right side then you have a starter that rotates counterclockwise and if it is on the left side you have a starter that rotates clockwise.
