How to Properly Diagnose the Issue Before Having an Alternator Rebuild Performed

Sometimes the symptoms and indicators that an alternator is about to fail can be misdiagnosed. Before you decide to have your alternator rebuilt, consider that you can purchase a brand new alternator with a warranty for the same or lower cost than it would be for used alternator parts.

Why Heavy-Duty Alternators Fail

Alternators can fail for a number of reasons.  An overburdened battery will begin to lose its charge, placing stress on the alternator and eventually causing it to die.

A misdiagnosed symptom of a failed alternator is when the engine does not turn over on ignition. Some people will blame the battery for this problem, but sometimes the alternator is the culprit.

Diagnosing an Alternator Issue

Properly diagnosing an alternator issue and being able to differentiate a problem between an alternator and another issue is critical:

  • If you mistakenly blame the battery and replace it when the alternator is really at fault, your new battery will quickly die.  This is an expensive and unnecessary way to differentiate between an alternator and a battery issue
  • An easier and more cost-effective way to check the condition of your alternator is to use a voltage meter to check the battery voltage and terminal connections. When your engine is running you should get a reading between 13.5 v and 15 v
  • If your vehicle has an alternator light on the dashboard then this could help you determine if the alternator is the problem. This light should be on when you turn the ignition key to start the engine.  If it doesn’t light up then you know your alternator could be malfunctioning
  • A problematic drive belt can cause issues with the alternator by preventing the alternator from supplying sufficient charge to the battery. A common symptom of an improperly adjusted drive belt is loss of power when you turn on your headlights or air conditioning.  Check the belt for cracks or fraying to fix this problem
  • Seasoned motorists or mechanics may be able to hear a grinding noise coming from the alternator, which can indicate an alternator problem

Where to Fix an Alternator

If you have mechanical experience, you may be able to diagnose the problem yourself however, you should take your vehicle to a qualified technician who has the equipment to properly diagnose and can also complete the repair or installation of a new alternator. Keep in mind that you can purchase a new alternator with a warranty for the same or lower cost as an alternator rebuild.
