- If your vehicle has an alternator light on the dashboard then this could help you determine if the alternator is the problem. This light should be on when you turn the ignition key to start the engine. If it doesn’t light up then you know your alternator could be malfunctioning
- A problematic drive belt can cause issues with the alternator by preventing the alternator from supplying sufficient charge to the battery. A common symptom of an improperly adjusted drive belt is loss of power when you turn on your headlights or air conditioning. Check the belt for cracks or fraying to fix this problem
- Seasoned motorists or mechanics may be able to hear a grinding noise coming from the alternator, which can indicate an alternator problem

If you have mechanical experience, you may be able to diagnose the problem yourself however, you should take your vehicle to a qualified technician who has the equipment to properly diagnose and can also complete the repair or installation of a new alternator.
